Ryan W.
Private tutor in Seattle, WA
Education
BA Mathematics - University of California at Berkeley. Master's - Cambridge University, Darwin College. PhD coursework - University of Texas at Austin.
Experience
Having graduated from Berkeley and Cambridge University's elite "Part III" mathematics master's program, Ryan was well on the path to becoming a research mathematician. But in 2013, while in the math PhD program at UT Austin, he began to find academia a bit too stuffy and rarefied. Drawn to more practical and human pursuits, he stepped up his tutoring game and began to teach himself programming. In late 2014 he relocated to Seattle to be closer to his family and the city's thriving tech scene. Along his path through academia, Ryan acquired a rich diversity of teaching experiences, and through them discovered a passion for teaching and tutoring mathematics. He has taught students of many different ages and skill levels, in a wide variety of settings, both individually and in groups, both for classes and test prep. This diverse set of experiences has made him a versatile and adaptable tutor, and has shaped his personal tutoring style, which is patient, collaborative, nurturing, and challenging. When tutoring, Ryan shares the driver's seat and helps students experience the rewards of discovery and achievement through their own exploration and initiative. He believes it is far less important to learn any given thing than it is to learn how to learn. Note: Ryan also tutors online! Listed rate is default in-person, but custom rates are available, depending on age, subject, in-person vs. online. Contact him to find out about custom rates!

Hobbies
Ryan is a nerd and proud of it; he loves all things STEM. Mathematical physics was his cup of tea for a while there, but now he's learning programming, and looking forward to actually making things instead of just studying them. As a science lover, Ryan naturally loves nature - he likes to be outdoors and is an avid hiker and backpacker. He also loves to read and write, especially philosophy and science fiction. One of his dreams is to publish a sci-fi story someday! When not heavily nerding out, Ryan likes to listen to music, watch films, and play board games.
