Jacquelyn B.

Private tutor in Seattle, WA

Education

Seattle Pacific University - BA, Economics

Experience

Five years as a mathematics tutor, four of those five years paid by the Clover Park School District. I desire to be a tutor because I want to teach but have yet to afford taking classes to get my teaching certification. WhileI save up and prepare to take those courses I would like to work with students as much as possible.

Hobbies

My interests include policy writing for public education. I use what I've learned while obtaining my degree to look particularly at community development. I believe education is a huge part of creating a well functioning society. Outside of that my passions include music (I play several instruments and sing). I have an unending interest in connecting with students. I was homeless throughout high school and I find that that gives me some background that many tutors can't offer to different groups. Lastly, I desire to see a holistic approach to learning. I don't want to waste anyone's time, particularly not the student so when I tutor it is important to know that my main interest is for the student to come to the parents having gained something worth while. For my more casual hobbies, I love to dance, I have been dancing for quite some time and love everything about it. I find that my favorites so far have been Samba and traditional dances from Liberia. Since I will be graduating I will have some extra time and in this open time I will be doing some form of volunteering, likely with Union Gospel Mission. I love to work on issues like homeless from the ground level up. It helps me to be focused when I am writing papers and giving policy suggestions. Reading for fun is probably been the hobby I have missed the most since starting at Seattle Pacific University. I will probably start my search for some good books to read to children who have a hard time getting engaged while reading. Really I am an ambivert who really enjoys a wide variety of things. I love spending time outside or finding fun ways to enjoy time inside without having to resort to television. My music consists of quite a lot, probably because I grew in a diverse area. Right now I am going back through some of Stevie Wonder's covers of jazz pieces but I am particularly focused on Spain, by Chick Corea. I also listen to some opera, some soul, but a lot of blues. If there is any way I have found to connect with a student, it is through the music we can both listen to.
