EducationI have a Master of Marine Affairs (University of Washington 2013, 3.8) which is an interdisciplinary degree including environmental science, management, and policy.
I also have earned a Bachelors of Science in Biology (St. Louis University 2008, 3.7)- graduating Magna cum laude with an Honors degree, a Spanish minor and certificate in Leadership Development.
ExperienceMy focus is to help your student succeed and develop skills that translate to every day life, like goal setting. I know I've achieved my goal when your student is so confident they can find solutions to their own problems, that they don't need me anymore. I teach my students not just the material, but how to develop effective study habits and skills.
I have taught high school and college-level biology, psychology, and environmental science, tutored with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and volunteered in school programs in 3 Spanish-speaking countries. I have a keen eye for editing writing and developing essays, and I have a strong passion for critical thinking. I love science, I love writing, and I love to help young people become self-sufficient.
One of the most accomplished young men I know was a boy I tutored and mentored with Big Brothers/Big Sisters in St. Louis. We bonded over our love of reading and writing. He is now on a full-ride to study English at Loyola U, and still teases me about how I made him set and achieve homework goals before he could play outside.
I do well on standardized exams because I learn what the exam is looking for and then practice those exact skills. I received a 1380/1600 on the older version of the SAT in 2003, a 31 on the ACT and a 1360 on the GRE.
HobbiesI push myself every day to develop stronger self-discipline and achieve my goals. I have traveled around the world to do environmental conservation research and will teach your student about how to see the world from a different view. I really enjoy working with young people to help develop and achieve their personal goals.

Barbara is a fabulous tutor! She has been tutoring my son, a sophomore at Roosevelt, for the past 2 years. Barbie is patient, kind and extremely knowledgeable about the subjects she is tutoring. She has taught him study skills and empowered him to want to do better in school. She is involved in many activities and my son is able to easily relate to her. Barbie tutors my son in Math, Science, Spanish and recently she started editing his papers too. She is amazing and I don't know what we would do without her!
Barbara is an exceptional tutor. She knows her stuff and was able to engage my rather shy daughter. My daughter's confidence increased and her Spanish language skills increased. Barbara is reliable, punctual, and responsible - all things one hopes for in a tutor. I am a teacher and a hard grader and I still grade Barbara as 5 stars!
Barbara is effective, timely, fun, and supportive. She continues to work with my daughter and they have established a positive learning process, motivating my daughter to achieve successful results.
Barbara helped me with an assignment that worths around 60% of my overall grade. I got an A in this assignment. She is very vyer good at biology, I recommend her for everyone.
