As a teaching assistant for General Chemistry II, working under Dr. Stephanie Dillon, I was able to directly interact with younger undergraduates and guide them through learning the basis of chemistry laboratory technique. I was responsible for two sections of a general chemistry lab, nearly 50 students, all of whom relied on me to help fill in the gaps where they had not yet learned the information they needed to complete the lab. Passing along information in a way that is manageable and easily digestible for students is a skill that takes practice and dedication to the act, and beginning when I did allowed me the opportunity to start learning the best methods with which to do this. In addition to teaching, I was also given the opportunity to tutor in multiple instances. The first came through my professional chemistry fraternity, Alpha Chi Sigma, through which I offered twice-weekly free chemistry tutoring in Florida State’s Science library. Here I was able to assist a wide variety of students, and it was when I truly began to feel like an integrated part of the chemistry community. The second opportunity to tutor was a very different but also very valuable experience. Beginning in the fall of 2015, I was hired to work with the students of FSU’s Center of Academic Retention and Enhancement program (CARE). The program offers financial assistance, college acceptance, and transitional support to students from low-income families, and include the requirement that they must be the first person in their family to enter the program. As a tutor for this program I was offered a unique opportunity to act both as academic support, but also to encourage respect for oneself and others and themselves, along with general societal customs and behaviors.
