Education

Hobart & William Smith Colleges, Class of '08 BA - Asian Languages & Cultures, History, Minor in Philosophy I spent 3 years in independent study focused on the Kenmu Era of Japanese pre-modern history, and how the events of the period between 1320-1333 were quite close to singular in importance to the eventual formation of Tokugawa-era popular culture and discourse. I also sat on the Food Board where I "lobbied" for the inclusion of alternative diets in the campus diners, broadcast a radio show out of WHWS, and studied in Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, Japan in 2007 where I organized a sustained community beautification effort executed by the students with local government cooperation.

Experience

Since 2005, I've tutored elementary school students up to middle aged adults in English and Japanese, both independently and through organizations. I've worked with Concordia College, Waseda University, Lexus E.C. (in Shibuya), Miyako & Miyako Kita High Schools (Iwate Prefecture), through dispatch services such as Club Z! (Pittsburgh) Interac (Japan), and taught a wide range of independent classes including TOEIC certification, Rakuten's internal courses, and JLPT prep. I was certified JLPT N2 in 2011, have worked 6 years in bilingual market research and PR consultancies, have launched 2 art galleries in Tokyo, and am a seasoned event coordinator in Japan's underground music scene.

Hobbies

I'm rather adventurous and inquisitive, and tend towards the highly experimental in art and particularly music. I'm actively hunting a hot sauce I can't eat, and enjoy both group and solo hiking. I think logic's a funny sort of thing, and like both jokes and puzzles that seem to break it - this is one reason why both Japanese and English are such fun languages. Indeed, you know you're getting really good when you can start making complex jokes that get laughs.
