Experience

Being a native speaker of French and English, as well as a proficient Spanish speaker, uniquely poises me to tutor others in foreign languages. I have studied foreign languages my whole life and have ample experience to share. I enjoy taking foreign language classes at the UW to refine my expertise. My passion for international affairs, and the large variety of classes I have successfully taken at UW, make me an ideal candidate to tutor the aforementioned subjects as many humanities classes at UW are interconnected and require a multifaceted approach that I can provide. As a peer tutor within the UW Department of French and Italian studies, I have worked with various students to develop their skills in foreign languages ranging from proper sentence structure to verbal fluency. It brings me joy to share my culture and language with others while facilitating their pursuit of fluency in a foreign language. Additionally, during my year as a Model United Nations teacher's assistant I gained experience in developing lesson plans that revolved around international affairs, history, geography, and political science. Students in the class were expected to establish in-depth research skills and then write research papers on their given topics. My main responsibilities entailed providing the students' with a strong foundation in research skills and grading the papers. Each time I had finished grading the papers, I made sure to meet with each student, individually, so as to discuss their grade and overall progress in the class. This enabled students to understand their mistakes more thoroughly and created an open dialogue between us so they could feel free to ask more questions. In the role of a freelance Spanish tutor, I mainly focused on tutoring students who were preparing for the AP Spanish exam. This meant tailoring my plan to each student based off of their individual needs. Oftentimes foreign language exercises can be quite overwhelming if the student is already struggling with understanding the primary concept. To combat this it helps to break it up and practice each concept individually before trying to combine all the concepts. This "building blocks" strategy is one that I use for myself and for my students as it allows us to learn incrementally, at our own pace, and reduces the potential for frustration. I have found that this strategy is particularly effective in foreign language study. Providing positive encouragement and feedback alongside constructive tutoring, helps encourage struggling students. If students feel that they have someone on their side they are more likely to open up and ask questions rather than shutdown in frustration. To me, it's important to be available to students even outside of the strict appointment time, for simple clarification questions, as confusion stemming from these questions typically leads to larger setbacks that would have to be addressed at the next appointment.
