Experience
Over four years experience tutoring (math, E.L.L., econ, SAT, GRE) and three years teaching math and English as a foreign language. My background spans Mathematics to Philosophy to Law, but I talk in a straightforward and non-academic manner. I believe most material can be broken down into everyday language and illustrated by real-life examples. This is especially true in mathematics. My teaching philosophy emphasizes the adage "teach a man to fish." One of the goals of each lesson is to show the student how much he/she already knows and how to build from there to mastery of the subject. I have taught English as a foreign language both in class and in the home, and mathematics to high school students in Spanish. Recently, I tutored and mentored at a high school on the South Side, where I was amazed what students from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods can do with respect and encouragement. I approach mathematics like language, foreign language like music, and writing like sport, and I adapt to the student's personality and learning style. My ultimate goal is to help a student take charge of his or her own learning while being a mentor and coach along the way.
