Mark B.
Private tutor in Seattle, WA
Education
I'm an award-winning 20-year veteran of metropolitan daily newspapers and 15 more in public relations, public affairs and politics. My degree is in English Literature (University of California, San Diego, '80) with a minor in Ancient Middle Eastern History.
Experience
As both a newspaper editor and public relations consultant, I have tutored (though each might have a different word for it) everyone from junior reporters to experienced CEO's and business executives. I taught the Public Relations certificate course at the University of Washington several years ago. My biggest strength as a teacher is in instilling an understanding in my students as to WHY it is so important to be well-spoken, whether in writing or the spoken word. (Think "Eats Shoots and Leaves.") My students (or employees) tell me they typically learn more from me than any other editor/supervisor/teacher than anyone else they've ever worked with. Also, I'm the only tutor that most people have had to set a land-speed record on a motorcycle (yes, at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 2006 -- 190.490 mph!)

Hobbies
Politics, theater, motorsports, outdoor activities (hiking, tennis, kayaking. I'm passionate about what I care about, and I have occasionally been accused of being a Rebecca (extra credit if you can identify the reference). Life is short -- we're not here very long, so I expect to enjoy it and enjoy all the people around me.I try to instill that sense of wonder and joy in the kids I tutor.
