Washington University in St Louis - BA, Biology

I received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Washington University and will attend medical school at the University of Pittsburgh next year. I have taken a year off between my undergraduate studies and medical school to work with a start-up company dedicated to creating better glasses for residents of developing nations. I have tutored students in various introductory science classes, and also assisted with MCAT preparation. In addition to my academic teaching experience, I have coached tennis for several years. My favorite courses to tutor are Chemistry and Biology, since these subjects are fundamental to medicine. I believe, though, that the standard approach to teaching introductory science courses is too focused on memorization. In my mind, the best and most effective courses were those that highlighted application and put information in the context of research and developing knowledge. I find this type of presentation more engaging, and attempt to offer my students that same type of engagement by making the material at hand relevant. Medical innovation is one of my primary areas of interest. I'm also interested in entrepreneurship and enjoy tennis and traveling. In addition to basic science courses and MCAT preparation, I am willing and able to assist students preparing for the SAT.
