Experience
I have tutored students in writing and reading throughout my academic career at Stanford and Penn State. During undergrad, I was a coordinator as well as a tutor, meaning I had the opportunity to supervise other tutors as well as work with students. I held almost 500 sessions at the tutoring center, and during that time I honed my skills in listening and reading, which helped me become a better tutor. My specialty is working with a student's essay and helping them find the specific parts that are causing problems - I try to help them identify their own strengths and weaknesses so that we can work on them in the future. I want all of my students to succeed, and I developed close bonds with students I worked with often. I was able to continue this during graduate school, where I was a teaching assistant and mentor. Not only was I able to help the students who came to me, I was able to create long term relationships with them and customize my approach toward our sessions.Even after finishing school, I have found time to volunteer and give back to those who could benefit from my teaching. I worked with two different programs in the Bay Area and had the opportunity to tutor students in middle and high school who needed help in reading, as well as elementary students who were behind in various subjects.
