My name is Karoline and I was born in Peru. My dad was American and my mom Peruvian. I spent my life in equal parts in three countries and was very fortunate to have learned three languages through total immersion at a young age. I studied Audio/Visual Communications in college and also studied acting in New York City. My life has been greatly enriched by the languages I speak as I have been able to live and thrive in different parts of the world with ease. I have made many wonderful friends of different backgrounds along the way. Since 2003 I have been passing along my language skills through teaching. I started teaching Spanish and ESL in Germany and after moving to Seattle in 2007, teaching German and Spanish online and privately. About my method: I have taught for language schools in Germany and I currently teach for the largest language learning software company in the world. I have taught using full immersion (using only the target language) and a combination of mostly full immersion but with some comparison to the native language as well as some translation. The goal is to teach using full immersion mostly but I will not shy away from breaking immersion, if needed. How do I decide when to break immersion? I break immersion when it is obvious to me that the learner is very confused. Confusion causes frustration, and frustration may cause learners to give up. My goal is to keep students content and motivated. What about grammar you wonder? I never use drill techniques or tedious grammar exercises that can be very boring (you may remember these from your Spanish class in high school, if you are old enough). Instead, I explain what we are working on, clarify what the grammar structures are, and then let you practice with real, palpable situations (role plays, conversation, narrating). Your language learning experience with me will be fun!
