Experience

I'm lucky to have had the pleasure of tutoring a variety of subjects to many different skill levels over the past couple of years. My junior and senior years of high school I worked as a peer tutor, developing skills and adopting strategies to work to each individual student's need. I learned that the most effective tutor must not only teach subject material, but help develop corresponding study and organizational skills. I had a wonderful time last Summer teaching English in Phapang, Thailand. There I lived and worked in the village, spending mornings teaching and playing soccer in the afternoons. It was a challenge. Many teachers knew only bits of English, but I eventually adopted special strategies for each classroom I taught from the kindergarteners to eighth graders. At Brown, I volunteered in Providence at a Liberian community center to work with students ages 6 to 18. This was particularly tough because many students there had started to dislike learning simply because one or two things in class just were not making sense to them. I believe that any course can be interesting or even fun once it is explained in the right way. It is a shame that a single bad teacher can ruin a whole subject for some students. I am particularly skilled at helping people navigate the college process. I just went through every seemingly grueling piece of it and have a lot of insights about how to choose the right college, look for scholarships, and make an application stick out of the crowd. Editing and helping work on college essays is one of my favorite things to do. So much so that I do it for fun. I have already edited dozens through an alumni volunteer group to help kids at my old high school. Although I love to help people improve writing skills, but I also have a passion for math and sciences. AP Biology, Marine Biology, and AP Calculus were some of my favorite courses in high school, and I love revisiting those subjects in college.

Hobbies

At Brown I write for Blog Daily Herald, a student publication that provides a mix of comedic and pertinent posts that is read by over five thousand people daily. Past posts of mine include a range of topics from investigating shady business dealings a local bar, to comparing March Madness college basketball teams to melting snow piles on campus. I am also an avid outdoorsman and love living in Seattle because it gives me the opportunity to get outside. My favorite place in the world to hike is the Cascades. I spent seven days last summer backpacking and fishing with friends out on the Enchantments Lakes near Leavenworth, WA. This Summer I will be lifeguarding, practicing guitar, taking weekend trips to mountains, playing pickup soccer and basketball, and working on a startup company with some friends.
