Experience

I love teaching. More specifically, I love being part of someone's discovery that math isn't really a foreign language and that writing doesn't have to be a torturous process. I believe that learning should be fun, and I enjoy seeing the satisfaction, confidence, and wonder that comes with understanding and success. As a high school senior, I student taught a sophomore biology class as part of an education course, and assisted with developmentally delayed and ESL courses. At Seattle Central Community College, I was elected by faculty to serve as Lead Tutor for their new Writing Center. When I transferred to Southwestern University, I completed a Teaching of Writing course, and served as the Assistant Director for the Debby Ellis Writing Center, where I was responsible for the orientation and training of new writing center staff. As a Calculus student teacher, I held office hours, graded homework, prepared worksheets, and ran recitations. I also served as a Southwestern University math tutor, and tutored and mentored middle school and high school students (through Operation Achievement and Upward Bound). My passion for learning and communicating about mathematics, literature, and writing earned me departmental awards in both math and English. I have a lot of experience working with frustrated students, adults returning to school, and English Language Learners. (I was a frustrated student when I first attended college, and then was an adult when I returned.) My goal in a tutoring session is to focus on transferable skills, so that each session not only addresses the assignment at hand but also provides clients with skills, techniques, or tricks they can use in future assignments. For example, we can practice using a reference text or reverse-outlining a paper, so that you leave every session with more tools for independent learning. I'm happy to do test prep for the following: SAT: scored 1350 (back when it was out of 1600) ACT: scored 33 GRE Verbal Reasoning: scored 168 (98th percentile) GRE Quantitative Reasoning: scored 167 (94th percentile)

Hobbies

I enjoy relaxing with my family, playing terribly complicated board games and card games, hiking and backpacking, reading, playing basketball and volleyball, and dancing to live music. Like most people, I'm all for good people, good conversation, and getting outside during our amazing Seattle summers.
