Tutoring humanities and lower level math and sciences to students 12-18 years old, my style is to find balance between one's interests and what they need to accomplish. This is a challenge. It does, however, make my tutoring sessions more engaging and learning more holistic. I can make tangents productive if relevant and they draw in motivation and creativity. It is important to relate material to a student's interests (connecting literature to modern life, history to the news), thereby engaging them; particularly if I'm tutoring on a subject such as Shakespeare or Jane Austin. We can't always draw these connections, however. Sometimes we just have to get the work done. When I tutor SAT or ACT preparation, strategy is important, because these tests challenge how one knows how to take them. It's not always about content. One must understand the questions, general format, and traps hidden in these important exams. A student can then score well. I have taken those tests, plus the GRE, so I know all the tricks. A Seattle native, I graduated from the University of Washington and NYU, where I got a master's in English and American Literature in 2015. My hobbies include climbing, ceramics, and vegetarian cooking.
