Experience

It's a shame that math is disliked or misunderstood by many, and I believe it's due to a failure by teachers to adapt to a student's learning style. Math is a very beautiful and straightforward subject area, qualities that may be difficult for teachers to convey. That's where I come in. As a teacher, I provide a method of teaching providing "best fit" explanations of problems and solutions that paints a clear picture of the scenario. My main approach is to ask you, the student, to walk me through how you did the problem up to the point where you become stuck. Even if you haven't started or made progress on an item, having you explain to me how to approach the problem allows me to see where your journey to the solution goes off course due to unsound logic. When this happens, I step in and provide examples of how to frame and think about the problem with drawings, hand gestures, and tangible examples from everyday life. This allows for us to discover a new and more accommodating approach to the problem. If the problem is a bit too difficult for you to describe, I can provide a path from the starting point of the problem to the solution. Whichever approach we take, I will act as a tour guide and describe with thorough description where we are in the journey to the solution and why and point out easily identifiable patterns that will make the understanding process less foreign. Teaching is a skill that I look to enhance every day, in and out of the classroom. When I was 16, in 2008, I made an instructional video visually showing how to change your default media player to any media player software you want to use, such as VLC, which is a light, RAM considerate alternative to the Windows default Windows Media Player. Even before I knew I wanted to be a teacher, I was teaching. I have been tutoring formally since October of 2011. Since then I have tutored an array of people, including UW students, Seattle public high school students in both public and alternative schools, and working professionals. I have worked for the city of Seattle as an after school academic support tutor and worked on high school subjects including algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, calculus, physics, social studies, language arts, and Spanish.
