Sarah D.
Private tutor in Seattle, WA
Education
Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, University of Washington, 2018. Bachelor of Arts in English, Hamilton College, 2014.
Experience
During the school year, I teach English and creative writing at the University of Washington, where I am also pursuing a Master's of Fine Arts in Creative Writing (Fiction) and taking courses towards my Ph.D. in English Literature. I taught English 131: Expository Composition at UW this past year, and will begin teaching English 284: Beginning Short Story Writing next year. I am a kind and incredibly patient tutor, and feel comfortable working with students of any age. Before moving to Seattle, I received my Bachelor's degree in English from Hamilton College, a small liberal arts college in upstate New York. Outside of my academic coursework, I also have extensive experience working at professional magazines and student publications. I am currently on the fiction editorial board of The Seattle Review at the University of Washington. As an undergrad, I worked as an Editorial Assistant at 7x7 Magazine in San Francisco, writing and copy editing for the print magazine. I also wrote travel articles for offMetro S.F. and interned for Hannigan Salky Getzler literary agency in New York City. I am very familiar with American and British literature, and my personal specialties are 20th and 21st Century American and British literature, as well as contemporary literature and poetry. I am also very familiar with the AP English courses offered in high school (I took both AP Language and AP Literature as a student at Lynbrook High School in San Jose, CA), and have read almost every book likely to show up on the test. I also have a great deal of experience with poetry, both through creative writing courses and English literature courses and I feel very comfortable teaching students to write essays on poems and learn how to do a close reading of a poem. I am also a very competent copy editor, and have worked on numerous professional and student-run publications. If you have an essay that needs some work, I can do more than simply edit for spelling and grammar- i can give you substantial feedback on the argument, structure and organization of your paper. Also, for students who are just beginning to write papers (or who never were actually taught how to write a paper), I can give you a sound and painless blueprint for acing your next paper. I am also very comfortable tutoring history, particularly European and American history and government. My specialties are the American Civil War, Russian Revolution, WWI and WWII, Renaissance, Reformation and social history.
